The Exner Building is a three-story retail and apartment building located in downtown Bellows Falls, constructed circa 1900.
The project involved renovating the building and converting the upper stories to artist housing, while maintaining retail uses on the first floor. The building has a unique structure with the second and third floors suspended from trusses in the attic. The renovations required changing the load patterns and, in some cases, removing tie rods.
Stevens & Associates designed a restoration of the trusses and re-framing of the structure to accommodate these changes while maintaining the historic fabric of the building.
