Windham & Windsor Housing Trust commissioned Stevens & Associates in July 2017 to provide architectural and engineering services for a new mixed-use multifamily housing project located at 29 Flat Street in downtown Brattleboro. The goal of the project is to provide affordable housing to the community and replace a vacant lot with a new multistory building designed for high performance and energy conservation. The building will include a mix of one, two, and three bedroom units in addition to efficiency and micro units. Other spaces will accommodate tenant amenities and community space including a common room, meeting room, office, small kitchen, tenant storage, laundry, and bike storage. The ground floor will be used for retail space.
This project will add to the streetscape and extend the downtown fabric on Flat Street. The building’s design will respect the distinct architectural form of Brattleboro’s downtown district by utilizing a mix of traditional and current materials to invoke the style of a nineteenth century town on a distinctly twenty-first century modern building. The design includes a pedestrian plaza to the front of the building creating an outdoor area giving residents and an active and engaging space to enjoy.
