Snow Block

Windham & Windsor Housing Trust commissioned Stevens & Associates in July 2017 to provide architectural and engineering services for a new mixed-use multifamily housing project located at 29 Flat Street in downtown Brattleboro. The goal of the project was to provide affordable housing to the community and replace a vacant lot with a new multistory building designed for high performance and energy conservation.

Completed in November 2019, the building includes a mix of studio, one-, and two-bedroom units. Other spaces accommodate tenant amenities and community space, including a common room, meeting room, office, small kitchen, tenant storage, laundry, and bike storage. The ground floor provides retail space.

This project adds to the streetscape and extend the downtown fabric onto Flat Street. The building’s design respects the distinct architectural form of Brattleboro’s downtown district by utilizing a mix of traditional and current materials to invoke the style of a nineteenth century town on a distinctly twenty-first century modern building. The design includes a pedestrian plaza to the front of the building creating an outdoor area giving residents and an active and engaging space to enjoy.
