Project Civil/Stormwater Engineer

As an integrated design and development firm, our projects range from revitalizing a defunct historic downtown hotel to rehabilitating Vermont’s Bennington Battle Monument to creating a site plan for the mixed-use building project housing the local co-op.

Whatever project you work on, we want you to bring enthusiasm for problem solving, along with strong organizational and communication skills. We are looking for someone interested in becoming a project manager, the ability to be self-motivated and work independently is essential.

This position is for a person who has recently become registered or is eligible to become registered, with a minimum five to seven years of similar professional experience. You will manage projects, and as your skills develop, you will be called upon to serve as project manager. You can also expect to serve on the team as a capable and efficient designer, often making major design determinations under the general direction of the project manager.

This is an in-person position with the potential for remote working up to 2 days a week, after a 90-day training period.

Typical duties include:

  • Is assigned to project teams and may make major design recommendations
  • Performs stormwater calculations
  • Designs site layout, grading, and utilities
  • Prepares reports, opinions, and recommendations for the approval of the Project Manager concerning the direction of the project
  • Acts as a technical advisor to junior professional staff assigned to the project
  • May have a better technical understanding of the project than does the Project Manager
  • May serve as field staff during construction
  • Prepares stormwater permit applications
  • Performs or directs staff in performing stormwater inspections
  • Is assigned component portions of major projects to gain experience in project management
  • Is assigned smaller projects to gain experience in project management
  • May have other duties as assigned

Education and professional experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering
  • 5-7 years of experience in site and stormwater design
  • Vermont stormwater permitting experience is highly preferred
  • Professional Engineers License preferred

Technical skills:

  • Proficiency in Civil 3D
  • Proficiency in HydroCAD
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams)

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational skills, including multitasking and time-management
  • Ability to prioritize and maintain organization in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Personal passion for and commitment to the enduring vitality of historic New England buildings and communities
  • Depp curiosity and creativity, complemented by a drive to solve problems and improve systems and processes
  • Professional demeanor and conduct, exercises good judgment, and represents the firm with integrity

Other job requirements:

  • A valid driver’s license
  • Ability to walk on uneven ground of active construction sites
  • Ability to carry up to 50 pounds

S&A was founded in 1990 as a small Civil Engineering firm with just two members. Since then, we have grown, layering in disciplines to help us better meet the needs of our clients and more seamlessly carry out their projects. In 2013, we added Architecture and in 2014 we created our sister company, M&S Development. In total, we are now a team of 25 professionals.
