Non-profit Main Street Arts is a community staple for the small town of Saxtons River, Vermont. With the combined efforts of Stevens & Associates and a dedicated board and director, the organization used historic tax credits, improvement incentives and fundraising to complete the project in the winter of 2014. A new elevator, fully handicap accessible bathrooms, and exterior ramp was added to make the building more accessible. A new sprinkler system was installed throughout both buildings, as well as additional storage space in the basement.
The design accommodates both day to day activities as well as performances by allowing spaces to be open or separated depending on the function. The new first and second floor lobbies provide a space for the public to gather, while classrooms and back circulation space keep performers separate for changing and practice during events. Exterior community green space, a covered porch, an inconspicuous loading dock, and sitting walls surround the new addition. They are perfect for warm weather events and continuing the charming, historic streetscape.
