Algiers Family Housing

Stevens & Associates provided engineering services for the Windham & Windsor Housing Trust’s Algiers Family Housing project. This new construction consists of a 15-unit building and a duplex located in the historic Village of Algiers in Guilford, Vermont.

Challenges presented at this site included:
» A brownfield cleanup on an existing warehouse parcel
» A new municipal water system extension from the Town of Brattleboro
» Steep slopes requiring a creative grading concept to maintain effective drainage, and to offer handicap accessibility
» Improving  parking and pedestrian walkways

Algiers Family Housing provides an excellent example of how civil engineers create meaningful public places through expertise in a range of skills, including site design, permitting, stormwater management, and utility design. The S&A team was able to use a broad range of skills in site engineering and environmental design to make this project an economic success and enliven Algiers Village. This project demonstrates the engineer’s ability to put technical know-how to work for social concerns by providing livable streets with emphasis on pedestrian access, resulting in pleasant outdoor spaces for families.
